How did EDM get so popular?

There are two ways that I personally think how electronic dance music got so popular. One way is as the years went on of people who liked the music from the start, they attended the small raves. Then once people started telling more and more people it became mainstream. With that since most people are followers they all wanted to take a look for themselves to see what these "raves" are about. Since the large number of people who kept on attended it required bigger events like Ultra music fest, Tomorrowland, Electronic daisy carnival, and Hardsummer.
The Main Way.
The main way I feel that electronic dance music has evolved is through social media. Social media has had a huge impact on modern Dj's. A duo that got interviewed by CNN says, "For us it (social media) has played a very big role," says Michael Thivaios of the duo Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike. "We can make a new track and with one click, it'll be spread all over the world. Twenty years ago you had a vinyl, and that vinyl had to go to a distributor, and six months later maybe another country would have the vinyl," adds the other half of the duo, Dimitri Thivaios.
"All we did for one year is talk to DJs by Facebook and somehow that got us our first gig. Social media has been the biggest factor in our career."
